Jomar Kraby opened his eyes in the blackness of night and heard a jangling noise without at first realising what it was. Gradually reality returned and he remembered he was in a prison cell. He was lying on a bunk, and the jangling was coming from the door. Someone was opening it. When he realised that, he swung his legs down onto the floor and sat rubbing his face.

He was in a prison. Thank God it was Swedish. When the door was finally open, the light came on as well. It was the same grumpy chief of police there, ogling him. With his bony face dominated by a bushy, moustache-less beard and his firm, square jaw, he resembled a figure from another era.

‘Good morning,’ Jomar yawned.

‘It isn’t morning.’

There was nothing he could say to that.

‘Gustav Møller sends his regards.’

‘I don’t think I know who he is,’ Jomar said, yawning again. ‘Is he a friend of yours?’

‘He’s the Swedish minister of social affairs.’

‘Right.’

‘You don’t know him?’

‘I’m fairly sure I know someone who does. If that helps.’

The chief of police didn’t answer.

‘I asked you to contact the Norwegian Legation,’ Jomar said. ‘Ragnar Torgersen. Have you contacted him?’

The grumpy chief of police didn’t answer. The door slammed shut.

Once again Jomar was alone, and he lay back down on the bunk. Staring into the darkness. Vainly trying to remember the dream that had ended so abruptly.
