Chapter 15

CHRISTOPHER FRANKLIN’S trailer looked the same as it had the previous day. The same long grass growing up the sides of the rickety structure. The same heavy tree that grew over and onto it, as if trying to absorb the trailer into its canopy. The same old furniture and mattress and piles of garbage everywhere I looked. Undisturbed, was how it appeared to me. Untouched for nine whole months.

There was one tiny difference, however. Not in the trailer, so much, but in the park itself. Yesterday, this little glade had felt as lifeless as a cemetery, one that didn’t appreciate mine and Hudson’s disturbing it. Now, it was abuzz with activity, as not only Hudson and I were there to execute the search warrant, but so were four other officers. They drove in two cars, one pulling up by the entrance to Greenside Getaway, the other trailing behind us until we came to a stop just a few feet from Franklin’s truck.

“Remember,” Hudson said coldly. He’d been that way all morning, ever since he picked me up from my apartment. He didn’t want me here, and he certainly didn’t like that he’d left himself no other option. “You’re here to observe. That’s all.”

“You won’t even know I’m here.”

“Don’t touch anything without asking. Don’t go anywhere without checking first. You’re not a cop, and as far as my men are concerned, your presence here is purely to ensure we execute the search warrant as directed by the judge. Got it?”

My smile was over the top. “Aye, aye, Captain.”

He narrowed his eyes in warning. I maintained my smile, and his scowl deepened. Then he climbed out of the car, making sure to slam the door behind him. The second he was out of the car, the four officers who had come with us fell in behind him. Two were quick to make their way around the back of the trailer, while the other two followed him to the front door. They followed procedure, knocking on the door and announcing their presence. When there was no answer, Hudson ordered for the door to be kicked open, which one of the younger officers was only too happy to do.

The door went flying, splinters spraying everywhere, and the officers shouted that they had a warrant as they ducked through the door and into the tiny trailer. I remained in the car, watching the theatrics with a sense that it might be best if I hung back for now. Hudson wanted his men to do a sweep before I poked my head inside, and I wasn’t going to do anything that might piss him off further.

Besides, little did Hudson know that the trailer was second on my list of places that I thought needed searching. As I said, if there was anything in that trailer that Vesper Adams thought might lead back to him, he would have removed it. But Franklin’s pickup truck on the other hand… that was a different story altogether.

I stayed put in Hudson’s car as he followed his two junior officers into the trailer.
