Chapter 15

The ringing of hammer upon anvil made her open her eyes and the forge that had taken so much of her young life stood before her. A song, something she had not heard since childhood filled the air and her mother walked by her humming contently on her way towards the forge. The air was warm and raising her face Yngrid felt the sun easing all her cares away. “York” Her mother’s voice rang out, come, “Place down your tools and eat with me. The piece will be there tomorrow for you to continue with.”

“Ah Isolde, you are the light I place in this blade. Yngrid will have a weapon fit for her, imbued with all the love I hold for you both,” Yngrid watched as her father came from the forge, a crude Sun-Fire within his grasp. “See,” he said rising it up and within the metal, she saw a spark of what it would become. “Already it holds much within it.”

“It is a fine weapon York made by a fine forge master,” The smile on her mother’s lips was one of love and indulgence, “But you will have her thinking she is some warrior meant only for a song. Do you not worry about her future?”

“No,” York placed the blade down upon the anvil and it glowed softly as it cooled. “We have raised her well and already she shows signs of being able to beat every man in this village. No raider will take her down I am sure. She will be a force in this world and our love will keep her safe.”

“What about marriage and children and the press of bodies in the night? If she concentrates so on fighting no man will want her.” her mother was swept up in her father’s arms and she watched as York kissed his wife with love. She protested for a moment but could not help return the kiss with love.

“Worry not my sweet. She is her mother’s daughter. She will give herself to the one willing to fight for her. Did I not have to fight for your heart after all?” York clasped her mother’s hand like a young lover and they began walking away from the forge.

“She will find her way.” Yngrid heard her father’s voice, full of laughter as it used to be, “Whoever captures her heart will be worthy of song, just as you are to me.” Laughing they walked towards the door to their cabin and Yngrid tried to follow but she could not move.

Slowly her parents disappeared and Yngrid reached for them. “No, come back,” she shouted but it was too late. Suddenly left alone in her village the sunlight faded and cold winds began to beat against her. “Mother, father, where are you!” she cried out once more but got no answer from them.

“You always thought the light within your blade was forge fire. It never was warrior. A fire would never have quenched the darkness Hare placed around my shaman.
