Chapter Seven
Best Friends – Fred Copeman and the Invergordon Mutiny
In 1935, the first blockbuster movie, about HMS Bounty, was made. It told the story of crewmembers mutinying against their cruel Captain Bligh, and the heroic way in which he rowed his tiny boat thousands of miles to hunt down his former mutinous crew. The film started Charles Laughton and Clark Gable, two of the biggest Hollywood movie stars of the age. In 1962, Mutiny on the Bounty was again recreated for the big screen; also with the biggest movie stars of the age in the key roles: Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard, and Richard Harris. As recently as 1984, the film was remade as The Bounty, starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins.
Films about rebellion and mutiny are often very popular and can be extremely lucrative for the studios who make them; but they can also serve another purpose: to get it firmly into the public’s mind that disobedience and rebellion are not acceptable and never successful, and that, if you do rebel, you will be punished and hunted down. Conversely, leaders who know better will always control the power, and consequently the media and state narrative. Up to the present (2018), I have yet to see any of the many remakes of Mutiny at Invergordon.
I have lost track of the big names that must have starred in this amazing true story; the Oscar awards that have been showered upon it; and the endless books and classroom debates about the two days, 15 and 16 September, 1931, when the British Navy mutinied and the government had to agree to its terms or fall from office. One of the leaders of the mutiny was Kath Duncan’s best friend, Fred Copeman, who had been raised in a workhouse and had joined the navy as a way of escaping to a better life.
