“Who are you—where are you?”

“I’m interested in whether you and your wife will take responsibility for your daughter and your grandchild.”

“Lorna?” he called out loudly. “I’m calling my wife to the other extension,” he explained.

A rattle, and Faith’s mother was on the phone.

“Hello?” she said breathlessly. “Do you have news about Faith?”

“I do. Faith is fine, and so is her baby—at least it seems so. She needs prenatal care, and a doctor should check her over. Please come and pick her up. Once she’s home, take good care of her. She’s a sweet girl.”

“Bless you! Thanks for watching over our daughter for these weeks. We’ve—I’ve been so worried,” said Faith’s mother.

“Where are you located?” Faith’s father asked again.

“Actually, I think I’ll drive her over to your house, in town. I’ve got a few errands to run anyway. No need to come all the way out here,” said Maureen.

“I heard a rumor . . .” Faith’s mother said. “You wouldn’t happen to be Maureen Jaston, would you?”

Maureen paused, wondering whether to admit it. She rubbed her lips. “Yes—I am.”

A grunt came from Faith’s father.

“Bless you, again, Mrs. Jaston,” repeated Faith’s mother, adding, “You and Mr. Jaston have been through so much. And you’re still doing so much for others—even while you run your dairy farm!”

“We all do what we have to in life,” said Maureen softly. “I’ll bring your daughter home tomorrow afternoon.”
