Chapter twenty-four

Wednesday, September 16, 2020

Perth, Australia

After two hours at the hospital, Jayne had returned to the house in Dalkeith at 12.30. They decided to split the time spent with Robert so that somebody was always there with him. Vera would spend the first night and Jayne would go the next day at noon.

They had talked with Harry over the phone, who offered to come in from the farm to be with them both, but decided it wasn’t necessary until they knew the full extent of Robert’s illness.

The last memory Jayne had was seeing him asleep with an oxygen mask over his face and the heart monitor beeping beside the bed. At least he was asleep, the sedatives having finally kicked in.

Now she stood in the open-plan kitchen, not knowing what to do. She should try to get some sleep but her mind was racing.

What if Robert had another heart attack?

What if he died?

How would they get back to England?

What would she do without him?

She looked down at her hands and found they were shaking. The last time she had been like this was when she was in the police. Her partner had been shot in Moss Side right in front of her. She had watched him die in her arms before the medics had arrived. She had been uninjured, but afterwards, the lasting trauma had meant she could no longer function as a police officer. In the end she had left the force, taking early retirement when it was offered.

For a long time she had been at a loose end, not knowing what to do and not committing to anything. It was Robert who had saved her. He had involved her in the research of his own family tree, and she found she enjoyed it more than anything else she had done for a long time. It was Robert who had encouraged her to take professional courses in genealogy and set up a company specialising in investigating genealogical cases, her skills as a detective and a researcher finally reaching their full potential.

That had been six years ago now, and she thanked him every day for pushing her and encouraging her.

He was her rock and she didn’t know what she would do without him.

She stood there, wondering if she should make herself a coffee, pour a glass of wine, watch television or just go to bed.

Then she heard his voice just as clearly as if he were standing next to her.

Don’t mope around, lass. Nowt will come from worrying about me all night long. You’ve got a client who’s expecting work from you. Get on with it.

She stared at her laptop. Should she get on with investigating Liz’s family? At least it would keep her mind from worrying about Robert.

She opened the laptop and keyed in her password.

Where to start?

Duncan had made it clear that he thought most of Annie’s obituary was made up; an attempt to comply with the social mores of the day. Was her birth date or any of the information correct?

Jayne thought even that date might be suspect.
