Chapter 11

That evening, I headed back to the hotel, browsed the internet, and tried to wipe the image of the Sheriff and Mary-Ellen in bed together out of my mind, but it was like the image of Wilberson’s unclothed body was branded into the inside of my eyelids. Even after I turned off the light, I laid asleep in the bed for what felt like hours because I was terrified of what I would see in my dreams.

I finally woke up bright and early the next morning, and I had a feeling that today was gonna be a long day, but also a productive one. I knew that the Sheriff was pushing the prosecutor to bring charges against Denny, despite the lack of any real evidence. There was always a chance that the prosecutor wasn’t under Wilberson’s thumb, so maybe Denny might still walk free. But I had a feeling that Wilberson would have made sure that the attorney was firmly in his control, which meant I didn’t have much time to clear my client.

I took yet another shower, threw on some clean clothes from my rapidly dwindling supply, and then remembered to brush my teeth. I sighed, but I didn’t feel like pulling my shirt off again, so I went ahead and loaded my toothbrush.

I was halfway through when I heard my cell phone ring in the other room. I walked over to check the caller ID and wasn’t surprised to see that it was Louis. The man had always been an early riser, and I’d heard more than a few complaints from the paralegals and secretaries about early morning calls from the boss. I, on the other hand, was used to his early phone calls, and on many mornings he often served as both a colleague and an alarm clock.

“Morning,” I mumbled as I picked up the phone.

“Did I wake you?” he chuckled. “You’ve got that raspy morning voice thing going on, Marcel.”

“No, actually, I just haven’t spoken to anyone yet,” I laughed as I hurried over to the bathroom and spat out all the toothpaste in my mouth. “Are you all good?”

“Yep,” he replied. “Just wanted to know if you have an update for me. You didn’t ring me last night, so I’ve been feeling pretty impatient all morning.”

“All morning?” I chuckled. “It’s half-past seven. The morning has barely started.”

“I’ve been up for hours,” he said, and I didn’t doubt that for a second. “It’s been bugging me all night. What’ve you got for me?”

“Hey, you didn’t have to go back to New Orleans,” I chuckled. “You could’ve been right in the middle of all this with me.”

“Whatever,” he sighed. “ C’mon, I’m dying to know.”

“Well, first of all, I can confirm that the Sheriff and Mary-Ellen are definitely having an affair,” I said.

“How’d you find that out?” he asked with an amused tone in his voice.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said with a shudder. “But I will say that I am officially scarred for life.
