Chapter Seventeen

Caspian could’ve cried when he saw a large, dark carriage tucked around the side of the orphanage. For the first time when rescuing someone, Caspian had to go into the cells, something he hoped he never had to tell Nikolas. Arthur had been hit over the head, and while he was still breathing, neither Caspian nor the boys could wake him.

Hearing a scuffle at the front of the dungeons, thanks to Nikolas’s men causing the diversion they’d promised, Caspian dove into the dungeon corridor, nodded his thanks to Raven, who’d managed to get the cell door open, and had dragged Arthur unceremoniously into his arms, mentally apologizing the whole time. Arthur had attended to him day and night, always impeccably attired in a suit and tie, and the robes of his position always freshly pressed and immaculate. To see him in such a state now…

“You’ve got a wedding anniversary I promised you’d attend, you old fart,” Caspian muttered as he did his best to treat Arthur’s limp form with respect and move them and the boys back down the corridor. The entrance used by the boys was a long-forgotten vent – a vent that was difficult enough for Caspian to get through on his own, let alone holding his advisor’s body.

“You need some ro-bo,” Raven whispered as Caspian stood below the vent, trying to work out how to get Arthur up through it.

“Ro-bo?” Caspian looked at the young boy in shock. Ro-bo was a short-acting spell, often sold or passed around at parties to help give a jolt to anyone feeling sleepy or drunk enough to pass out. Gunkermal was not a place magic was welcome, so the spell could usually only be bought on the black market.

“Yeah,” Raven nodded eagerly. “You know what that is, don’t you?”

“Of course, I know what it is,” Caspian huffed softly. “I’m surprised you do, but then I suppose I shouldn’t be.” He looked at Arthur, still lying limp in his arms, and then up at the vent hole which they’d left open. “He’d be so disappointed in me if he knew I had any to give him.”

“It’s either that or a rope and we lug him up, but I don’t think we’ve got that much time.” Raven poked Jamie, who fished into his pocket and brought out a small spell orb about the size of a marble.

There was a wise head on that small body. Caspian took the marble gingerly, and then nodded to the boys. “Get your butts up there, be ready to steady Arthur once I get him moving. And remember to treat him with respect. He’s one of the good guys.”

Raven nodded before forming a stirrup with his fingers to help Jamie reach the vent. Jamie was up and through in a blink, his thin arm hanging down for Raven to catch hold of as he swung himself up. “We’re ready,” he whispered.

“Okay then, Arthur.” Caspian lined up the spell ball with Arthur’s nose and then turned his head to one side, so he didn’t get caught in the spell puff.
