WHEN DANIEL REACHED HER ROOM and tapped on the door, Adele blotted her damp cheeks and let him in.

He wiped a fresh tear away and gave her a small smile. “Three lone people and two couples took tables just after she arrived. But only one of the solitary people stayed until just after she left.”

“The man with the brown trilby,” Adele said, for she had noticed him, too—especially as he had not removed his hat, as was proper. He’d read and smoked and drunk tea with his hand around the cup, instead of using the handle. Adele had not been able to see his face without staring. “He looked young.”

“Young enough,” Daniel agreed. “But seasoned, too. Useful shoulders.”

“So are yours.”

Daniel smiled.

Adele held up her hand as he reached for her. “A moment—I had a thought, I don’t want to lose it. Wait…yes, that was it.” She pushed Daniel away. Just a little. “We must find a way for Isa to speak freely. That’s why she shut the door on me, yesterday.”

“He was in the house…?” Daniel sank onto the little stool in front of the dressing table, looking winded. “We should have followed him.”

Adele shook her head. “We know where he will be.”

“Where Isa is.” Daniel bent and flexed the brim of his hat in his fingers, thinking. “Any letters you send to her, he’ll intercept.” He looked up at her. “He made her write all the letters she has sent. Including this morning’s.”

Adele nodded.

“You knew about him, didn’t you?”

“Not precisely,” Adele said. “Not until I saw him in the dining room. I couldn’t understand why she refused to speak to me at the house, so I tested a theory that she would respond to a letter, if I sent it, because that was…safe? Permitted?”

“It kept you at a distance,” Daniel said.

“Away from her…” Adele added. “She told me to leave the Cape, too.”

Daniel blew out his breath. “Very well, we get her on her own and…what?”

“I ask her a pointed question, and see what she says,” Adele replied.

“And how are you going to manage that? He’ll read any message you send her.”

“Not if he doesn’t know she received it,” Adele said.

“Oh?” Daniel tilted his head. “How do you plan to manage that?”

“With bribery, of course.”
