Chapter 14

Alize couldn’t see a way out of this. Here she was, shackled like a Guantanamo Bay inmate and stuck somewhere that apparently didn’t even exist. What did they intend to do, torture her? They hadn’t shot her, so they wanted something. She was feeling almost normal now, so she got up from the bed and tried walking. She could only take short steps with her feet restricted the way they were. Unless she could get out of these shackles and handcuffs, she wasn’t going anywhere. She couldn’t remember ever feeling so helpless.

Eventually, someone came with a meal, as promised. She wondered if it was drugged, but as her body needed refuelling she ate it anyway. An hour later there were no side effects, at least none that she was aware of. When the food tray was collected, one soldier came in and picked it up while another one stood by with a rifle pointed in her direction. She could tell they were curious about her but apart from ordering her to stand back against the wall, they kept silent. When they’d gone, she sat down on the bed and wondered what was coming next.

She found out a few hours later. Tony came back. The two soldiers made her sit on the bed while they put on additional restraints. Her ankles were now shackled to the metal legs of the bed, rendering her effectively motionless. It seemed they were taking no chances. The two uniformed men took up stations just inside the door, their rifles at the ready. Tony sat on the same chair he’d used last time, facing her.

‘A few more questions,’ said Tony. ‘You can answer them right here, or if you choose not to, we can apply pressure. First question: - what was this special operation you say you were involved in?’

Alize thought there was nothing to be gained by not talking.

‘I was ordered to kill the president and some of his associates.’

‘Why?’

‘I was told that Moreau was corrupt and that it was in British and American interests that he be removed. He had an appalling human rights record and he ran a terrorist training camp, here on St Genevieve. Once he was gone, a democracy would replace him and the terrorist camp would be dismantled.’

‘And you didn’t think to question any of this?’

‘I was following orders. They came from a superior officer.’

‘Who was this officer?’

She hesitated.

‘I… I’m not at liberty to say.’

Tony sighed.

‘For your information, Alize, the USA at least was quite happy with Moreau’s little set up. Yes, he was corrupt. But he supported American interests here in the Caribbean and welcomed our investment. We had a good thing going. Oh, and just for the record, there is no terrorist training camp here. Never has been.’

‘I see.’ Somehow, she wasn’t surprised to hear that.

‘I’m not sure you do see. You killed Duchenne, Chevalier, Moreau and god knows how many people around them. With what we’ve got on you, we can lock you up for a thousand years.
