“I have to stay. The ship needs to be cleaned for the return trip.”

“I thought you would stay here.”

“I was always going back,” said Dorete. “My life is in Europe. My family is there. It might have been different, but not now. Mind if I walk with you?”

“I was hoping,” said Lev.

Dorete slid her arm in his as they walked down the boardwalk toward the streetcars. Lev hoped they would appear as a couple to passersby.
