Twenty minutes later, Dr. Gould, Justice, Brody, and my father were exploring the Royal Mile with me, looking for a needle in a haystack. Kog was right. The shrine could be anywhere. With the crowds of tourists on a Sunday, it was hard to move down the cobblestone road.

Justice stopped. “We’re being followed. I can sense it.”

Dr. Gould scanned the crowded street. “Is it the Unseelie?”

“Yes and no. I sense the Fae as well as something else. Something that doesn’t want us to see them.”

I lowered my voice. “The Reaper.”

“Possibly,” Justice agreed uneasily.

My father looked at Dr. Gould. “We should split up and rendezvous at the Scott Monument.”

The Scott Monument was a Victorian Gothic structure in Princes Street Gardens with a two-hundred-foot tower that was hard to miss.

“As much as I hate to do this, I think you’re right.” Dr. Gould glanced at his watch. “We’ll meet there in an hour and see if we can shake our pursuers. Be careful, and don’t take any unnecessary chances. I don’t want another team member to go missing.”

We split up and went our separate ways. I made my way through the winding cobblestone streets of the old town, feeling like a hunted fox.

Suddenly a brawny man pushed another guy in front of a pub directly in my path. “Stay away from her,” he drawled, barely able to get his sentence out.

The other guy pushed him back. “No. I’ll talk to whoever I want.”

People stopped and gathered around them. I slid past the onlookers as fists went flying.

I got out of the way and immediately turned down an alley, hoping to lose whoever was following me.

The sounds of the city faded away in the narrow, dark alley. Tingles moved along my arms as I made my way down. An uneasy feeling settled over me like a cloud of doom.

Something was different about this place.

Something magical.

It pulled on my dragon buried inside me, almost as if it wanted me to shift.

I glanced over my shoulder but didn’t see anyone. Only shadows. That didn’t mean anything, though. The Reaper could be right behind me, disappearing in the shadows.

Something was calling upon me. Calling to my dragon, almost a whisper.

Come and find me.

Did I imagine that?

My dragon senses were honed and alert. A brush of warmth spread across my face, then cold chills slid down my spine, and I shivered.

What was happening? Maybe Dr. Gould had been right.

Clomp, clomp, clomp, clomp.

I thought I heard heavy footsteps. My heart raced as I whirled around, but nobody was there. Shit. It had to be The Reaper, and I was alone.

Stay cool.

I kept moving down the alley, though the walls seemed to close in on me. I’d almost reached the end when a tingling sensation spread through my body like hundreds of feathers brushing over me. I had never felt anything like this before. My dragon moved within me as if drawn to the sensations. Was this the hum of magic?

The alley opened into a small courtyard surrounded by tall buildings that blocked out even more of the sun.
