Chapter 18

Asher

We’re walking back from the park, where Ev insisted she had to go.

Except I couldn’t take her alone because Mom made me swear not to do anything without Wren’s help, then went on to list about a hundred ways things could go wrong because my knee’s still healing.

Currently satisfied, Ev’s skipping along the snow-covered sidewalk. Wren’s tightly wrapped up in a beige coat with her red hoodie—a piece of clothing she always seems to have on her—underneath.

“Happy now?” I turn back to narrow my eyes at my sister. She nods, her fluffy white earmuffs shaking along with her. Chuckling at her, I shake my head as we walk back to Wren’s place.

The cold air bites at my skin, and it’s like a greeting from an old friend. This is what it felt like entering the arena. Next to me, Wren’s boots meet the snow-covered pavement with a crunch as she tucks her hands into the pockets of her jacket.

I pull out my phone and click on Candy Crush. It’s practically crack. I even convinced Zach to get it so that we can compete. Yes, I’m aware of how fucking lame it is. Do I care? Not really, nope.

A loud tune fills the air when the app opens. A small smile sneaks onto Wren’s face. Pretending to ignore it, I tap on level 133. It’s one I can’t seem to get past. Furrowing my brows, I glance at the brightly colored candy scattered on my screen.

Something tugs on my jacket. It’s Ever, and she’s holding on to my sleeve. She gives my phone a glance before knocking it out of my hand, picking it up, and running off with it.

“Hey!”

“Run! ” Wren yells, and then she spins, her coffee-brown braid whipping midair as she starts running with my sister. Her black boots plow through the thick layers of snow. Ev is practically sub-merged and gets stuck. She turns around, too slow because I’m already on to her. She starts squealing.

“Quit it, you little brat.”

Wren just snorts, trying not to laugh when Ev doesn’t stop pushing through the layers of snow. “Don’t let go, Ever!”

“Wren,” I growl.

Wren grins evilly as she looks back at Ever, ignoring my slew of protests. Thanks to therapy, my knee ’ s stronger, and catching up to Ever is about as easy as you’d think it would be.

I yank her up and she shrieks in my arms as I set her down on more secure ground. Collecting my phone from her tiny hands, I find my screen still open on Candy Crush, and a Level Failed message rushes up along with upbeat music. Wren bursts out laughing. I grunt at the sound of literal failure being emitted from my phone, and I turn, finding Wren flailing around a few yards away from us. My knee slows me down as I run, but I’m still able to catch up with her. Her honey eyes widen when she sees how close I am. Yelping, she tries to run faster.
