‘Did you see who it was?’

‘No, Sir. It was any one of 20 men in the front rank. O’Shea might have a better idea if he were here and not off with the looters. I want him broken back down to private soldier again and, maybe worse.’

O’Brien pursed his lips. ‘We can’t flog the whole battalion. And every other regiment is the same. Look over there, there is cavalry, our cavalry, making off with paintings and carpets.’

‘On the matter of Broughton, I want to get to the bottom of this. Better leave it to RSM Doyle. Not a word, even amongst ourselves. The last thing we want is for the 58th to have the reputation as an officer killer. No, we don’t want that.’
