TWENTY-TWO
A policewoman with her hair in a bun, flat shoes and a pretty face led Grant into Lieutenant McCluskeyâs room. It was a box stolen off a larger office, with pale-green partition walls, the usual furniture and a large nude calendar with the compliments of a garage.
Bob McCluskey was behind his desk. In one of those mismatch relationships that work, he married a writer Grant knew, and they met at a party. He was a stooping, hoarse-voiced, melancholy character.
âCome on in, Jonathan, pull up a chair and just give me a second to put this stuff away.â He shovelled some papers into a drawer. âItâs good to see you.â
âItâs good to see you too.â
McCluskey nodded as if he habitually didnât believe anything he was told. He picked up the telephone and asked the switchboard to hold any calls for the next half-hour. Having done that he put his hands together and pulled the fingers into a catâs cradle. âLet me see,â he said. âIt must be six months since I last saw you. At Marciaâs wasnât it?â
Grant said he supposed it was. He looked away out of the small, square window into a courtyard crammed with fire escapes and ventilators that gave off curls of steam.
âWe should meet more often,â McCluskey was saying as Grant turned round. âHave a drink â maybe come and have some dinner with Barbara and the kids.â
âThat would be...â
âNice? Maybe it would.â
Grant took a chair. âMy enquiry caused you problems,â he said. It was a statement, not a question. McCluskey didnât bother to deny it.
âWhen you asked me to do a favour, well, naturally I did it. After all, weâve been friends for a while and it isnât as though you call me every day so you can get facts to beef up newspaper copy.â
âYou sound as though you have a complaint.â
âMaybe, maybe not. It depends on whether you were frank with me. It seems to me Iâm entitled to that.â
âThen ask me something.â
McCluskey gave a street-wise look. âOkay, so whatâs your interest in a Harlem drugs bust?â
âA book â Iâm looking for a new theme away from the War.â
âUh huh. Why donât I believe that?â
âYou have a suspicious mind?â
âI thought you were the one with the suspicious mind.â
âIn my case itâs paranoia.â
McCluskey turned his eyes away and glanced at what looked to Grant like a report. âHow are Kathy and Joey?â
âYou heard about that?â Grant said, getting the drift.
âFrom the local police â they kiss and tell.â McCluskey put the report aside. âThey tell me that was a black guy too.â
âSo Harvey said. I didnât see.â
âAny connection with your drugs story? I donât like to press you, Jonathan, but when you start enquiring about Harlem and then I learn some black guy has been taking pot-shots at you â well, the ting-a-ling of coincidence starts ringing in my ears.â
âMine too, old boy, but I donât know what the connection is. Maybe Iâve kicked an antâs nest and donât know it?â
âSure, sure,â McCluskey said. âCâmon with me.
