ROBOTIC AUTOMATION MOVES FORWARD

One of the most influential people in the development of industrial robotics was George Devol (1912-2011), who created the first electronically controlled robotic arm in 1954. He also developed a magnetic recording system that could read instructions from a drum coated with magnetic material. This is the same basic principle used in computer hard drives today. In 1955, Devol and Joseph F. Engelberger (1925-2015) formed a company to manufacture commercial industrial robots. The company was called Unimation, or universal automation. Devol used the term “universal automation” to describe a type of robot that could be programmed to perform a variety of tasks.
