Immigrants had to pass a physical exam before they were allowed into the United States.
Setting limits
The Immigration Act of 1907 successfully denied entry to people with any sort of disability or illness that might make it difficult for them to earn a living. A Presidential Coalition was soon formed to study the causes and effects of the mass immigration to the United States from Europe. The results of that study informed the writing of a new law.
The Immigration Act of 1917 made sweeping changes to immigration laws in the United States. Specifically, it required all immigrants over the age of 16 to pass a literacy test. It also banned homosexual immigrants from entering the country, as well as people from most Asian countries.
ELLIS ISLAND
One of the most famous entry points for immigrants was Ellis Island, near the Statue of Liberty. It was turned into a federal immigration station in 1892 by President Benjamin Harrison. Until 1954, immigrants arriving by ship to New York City checked in at Ellis Island. During its 62 years of operation, Ellis Island welcomed more than 12 million immigrants.
