Chapter 8

Alred

The goblin’s head fell to the ground, his lips frozen in a snarl. I kicked the body aside and spun around. Trolian was further down the road holding his own against two more goblins. The archers made quick work of those not engaged by the soldiers. The explosives attached to their arrows was a new tactic employed by the goblins and was unexpected, but the fight wasn’t going to last much longer.

I wiped the blade of my sword on my coat sleeve and turned to the tavern as a fire arrow landed on its doorstep.

“Nienna!” I ran but didn’t get there in time. The arrow exploded, throwing me clear across the dirt road and through the window of another building.

Glass rained down around me. I used the wall to drag myself back up, shaking glass shards from my hair. Screams came from the tavern, and a raw burst of fear that wasn’t mine had me doubling over. Staggering through the mess, I entered the tavern. Another rush of fear and pain had me grabbing hold of the doorframe to keep myself upright. A second later, it dulled, and I strained to see through the thick smoke from the latest blast.

A goblin snarled, and a body was tossed out of the tavern. It rolled, and the blondish-red head of hair had me sprinting toward her.

“Nienna.” I tapped her cheeks.

She coughed and gasped, clutching at her throat. She winced when I set her up. I tried to ask her what happened, but she pointed behind me and yelled.

I brought my sword up in time to catch the blade of the goblin. Yelling at Nienna to move, I shoved the beast back and attacked. In four swift moves, I had him disarmed and my blade through his chest. The killing blow drove him to his knees. He collapsed when I pulled my sword free.

A scuffle sounded behind me, and Nienna shouted. I readied my blade to attack again, but she beat me to it. She had the dagger shoved up and under the goblin’s ribs by the time I turned. He twitched and stumbled back. Nienna gasped and glanced at her side.

Too late, I spotted the dagger in the goblin’s hand, soaked in Nienna’s blood.

She blinked, surprised, glancing at her side. Blood bloomed through her shirt, and she fell.

I caught her in my arms and laid her on the ground. “It’s alright, you’re going to be fine,” I muttered, pressing my hands to her side. My hands glowed while I used magic to stem the blood pouring out of her body. “Keep your eyes open. Nienna, don’t you dare close those eyes.”

Her lips twitched. “Always so bossy.” Her voice was rough, and talking seemed to cause her pain.

I checked the wound, cursing under my breath. Pressing my hands to it harder made her cry out, but I didn’t have a choice. I had to slow the bleeding. My panic was making my magic flicker in and out, and the glow faded from my hands.
