Chapter Twenty-One
An hour after George left, Alex heard knocking at the window of his study, and he thought he had to be dreaming. Surely, Aimee wouldnât dare visit him here again, not after heâd specifically told her not to go anywhere after he dropped her off at his auntâs earlier in the day.
But another tapping at the window suggested he wasnât dreaming, so he got up from his chair and strode over to the window where, sure enough, his fiancéeâs face was visible through the glass, the afternoon sunlight making a halo around her head.
He swore heartily as he opened the window and pulled her through once again. âWhat the devil are you doing here? Does the countess even know youâre here?â
âUnlike you, she doesnât believe sheâs my keeper,â the darn woman said, raising a brow at him and crossing her hands over her chest.
âDo you Americans not use front doors? And let me guess, you walked here again, too?â The woman was going to be the death of him, he thought, blowing out a breath. âI donât remember my previous fiancée being so damn difficult. No woman, in fact.â
âThatâs because she wanted to marry you, whereas I do not,â came the womanâs pert retort. âAnd, yes, I walked here. I have legs, Your Grace.â Her hands fisted on her hips, and she looked as if she were ready to go a round boxing him. âIâm perfectly capable of using them on such a fine day. There was no need to bother the countessâs carriage driver or waste a penny on a hansom cab for such a short distance.â
For a second, he debated throwing her over his shoulder and marching her to his carriage to return her to his auntâs, then he thought heâd rather march her to his bed. âAre you going to tell me why youâre here, then?â
âAfter you left, I sent a note to an old friend, Professor Burton, asking him if he knew anything about any murmurs in the world of paleontology about trying to scare or harm someone. And he replied straight back with some useful information.â
She smiled up at him, and it was all Alex could do to stop himself from pushing her against the wall and kissing her until she was moaning his name. Instead, he pressed his lips together and counted to five. âAn old friend? How do you even know this professor?â
The man was a lecturer at Cambridge University and one of the foremost experts on paleontology in the world. Alex knew him, but not well enough to send the man a note.
âIâve been corresponding with him for years, discussing various hypotheses regarding calcareous microfossils.â She shrugged, and Alex got the distinct impression she wasnât telling him the entire truth.
âIn any event,â she continued, âafter what happened earlier and the possibility it could be a fellow collector behind the attack, I thought of the professor and decided Iâd ask him if he knew anything, which he does. Well, sort of.â
âWhat does
