Three kittens were left: a calico with yellow eyes, a tiger stripe with green eyes, and a solid black with orange eyes.
âThat little calico is the spitting image of Callie here,â said Mr. Lukens, Callie draped across his shoulders like a mink stole.
âSheâs a really pretty kitty,â I said, watching Gary as he played with the black kitten, making it leap and box at his wiggling fingers.
âAnd that stripy one reminds me of your own little guy.â
âMe too.â
âI donât know about you, but since Rex passed I canât even think of having a dog looks anything like him.â
âYeah. I donât think I want the tiger stripe.â
âHow about this one?â asked Gary, snagging the jetblack kitten by the scruff of his neck and holding him up for us to see.
âOh, that little guy,â sighed Mr. Lukens. âIâm having a heck of a time giving him away. Donât anybody want a black cat, especially coming up on Halloween.â
âI do. I want him,â I blurted out.
âYou sure?â Gary asked, handing the kitten to me. âI was only asking. I donât mean for you to take him if you think you want the other one.â
âSomeone else will take that pretty calico home. But no one wants this little guy, so heâs coming home with me.â
âAtta girl. Folks are too darned superstitious about black cats if you ask me. Iâve always thought they were good luck myself.â
âHowâs that?â asked Gary.
âWell, one night some years back I was driving home late, coming up on the railroad tracks. I was sleepy, but I swear to Pete there wasnât any signal. All of a sudden, this black cat goes streaking across the road right in front of my truck. I slam on the brakes so I donât run him over, and damned if right then, a train donât come barreling down them tracks. Iâd have been smashed to smithereens for sure.â
âFor real?â said Gary in amazement.
âItâs the Godâs honest truth. That black cat saved my life.â
I held the black kitten in front of my face, looking him straight in his pumpkin orange eyes. And then I knew for sure.
âLucky,â I said. âYouâre my kitten, and thatâs your name.â
âA black cat named Lucky,â said Gary, smiling. âThatâs way cool.â
Way cool. Gary Geary actually said that something I did was way cool. It was dumb, but I felt like Iâd won a grand prize or something. Lucky purred away, looking up at me with his jack-oâ-lantern eyes, his tickly tail swishing back and forth against my bare arm. Lucky was the way coolest cat ever.
