I’m staring at his messy writing, this horrible feeling crawling up my torso. Betrayal. Like a rat beneath my feet I can’t see – yet it’s been there all along.

I’m not the girl. I’m not you.

An urge to rip the pages, chuck the diary at the window. Even though I know it’s nonsensical. Groundless. I’m reading Arran’s diary behind his back and I’ve made all these assumptions, false connections.

Except they don’t feel groundless, or false. There are details in the diary which seem to correspond to me. And the way Arran acts with me, his looks, his touch.

After everything that’s just happened, I can feel an outburst beneath the surface. I put the diary down before I do something I might regret.

I’m shivering again. My clothes are still wet, my hair sodden and stuck to my neck.

I don’t do yoga. I haven’t had that conversation with Arran. Facts which undercut everything I thought was true. The building he was talking about isn’t a library. It must be some kind of gym or exercise centre.

I go over his entries, everything he’s narrated, and I try to picture her. This woman who isn’t me. I try to form an image but nothing holds. The details are in bits that refuse to come together and crystallise.

Who the hell is she?
