For the most part, victims of the Koro epidemic that arrived at Singaporeâs emergency departments were treated conservatively. None required admission to the hospital. Most were simply counseled and reassured that their penis was not retracting up into their abdomen, and that they were not going to die. Many received a calming injection of valium. In the oral history that resides in the National Archives of Singapore, Dr. Wong reported an unusual treatment for some of the victims of Koro. âSomebody told me you kick them in the backside and the âthingâ pushes forward. I tried it on a few patients out of curiosity.â Whether this was tongue in cheek is unclear. Nonetheless, Dr. Wong recalls that at the General Hospital the doctors were mostly, âreassuring them, diagnosing them, giving them injections, talking to them. They came in very fast. They went back very fast. After the heavy sedation of the valium injection disappeared⦠they want to go home again, thinking about sex with their wives.â
