Chapter 3: The Capture

Ever since I started living here, the other keas and chicks gave me the silent treatment. They didn’t come near me, talk to me, or even play with me.

I survived day after day of the silent treatment by all the keas except for the mother kea that took me in. None of them talked or even looked at me for the past two weeks, not even the chicks. So, usually, I would go to the nest I made and hide there till nighttime. I only came out when it was lunch time or dinner time.

I still haven’t got used to the food and the noise during the nighttime; but I was trying to. Was my destiny really with these birds? Anyway, I didn’t last very long with these keas. Something bad happened one night. Something that was way worse than being attacked by a whole lot of ferrets!

That night, I slept with the chicks once again. The first half of the night was peaceful. No snoring or sneezing woke me up. This was the only night I got to sleep in peace! Or was it?

Somehow, something doesn’t feel right. It was a bit too quiet for my liking. Suddenly, a loud Bang woke me up. I jumped out of my nest and looked around the Hollow.

To my surprise, I didn’t see any other chick in there besides Toko. Toko was one of my least favorite chick as he was the one who began the silent treatment towards me.

Having no other choice, I scrambled to Toko’s side.

“Toko! Toko! Wake up! All the other chicks are gone!” I boomed for the first time.

I shook Toko by the wing, desperately trying to wake him up. Toko finally got up, startled and shocked at the same time. I explained the sound to him and asked him if he knew anything. Turns out, he didn’t. Toko just stared at me in a daze.

I knew we had to act fast. We had to find out what was making that sound and what happened to all the keas. Even if that meant cooperating with Toko.

Suddenly, I felt a sharp tap on my shoulder. I turned back to see a stunned Toko. He was pointing his right wing in the direction of the Hollow’s entrance. His wing was shaking uncontrollably.

A shadow of a human flashed when thunder lit the sky, signaling rain. Mother had told me stories about these humans. They always had dreadful endings.

“Look!” Toko screeched as he saw the man carrying a net. In the net was all the keas: The chicks, elders, and the mother kea. Suddenly, the man looked in our direction.

“Duck!” I exclaimed, threw my wings around Toko, and dived into the nearest bush.

We hid there until the man was well and away from the Hollow. When I could scent nothing more than the stale smell of footprints left by the human, I signaled for Toko to come out.

“What…What are we going to do now?” Toko asked.

This was the first time he had ever spoken to me.
