Lester K. Slate woke when the alarm told him to—at 6:36 a.m. It was a Friday in October 1979. The alarm didn’t beep or clang but made a small, pleasant sound like the high C on an elementary-school xylophone. The clock was a six-month-old wedding gift from the sister of his wife, Melody, who lived in California. She’d said something about its balancing the day, and how they should wake slowly and remember their dreams. Lester’s sister-in-law had also given them a journal to record their spiritual journeys—but Melody had started pasting recipes into the dream book instead.

“I married the right sister,” Lester mused as he pushed the silence button on the alarm. “Not the fruitcake.” Setting the time for 6:36 instead of 6:30 was Lester’s idea, the symmetry appealing to the machinist part of his brain. He always enjoyed glancing over at a clock that read 11:11 or 2:02. Besides, it gave him six more minutes in bed with his new wife.

By 7:07 Lester was headed north across the bridge in his Ford F-150 pickup. He stopped and paid the toll, then exited at the first off ramp. At the drive-in at Mickey D’s, he handed money to the cashier at the first window and then picked up his coffee and the bag containing three sausage biscuits at the second window.

“Have a great day!” the woman called through the speaker.
