Noelle called the day after Christmas to see how mine had been. I didn’t want to tell her about how I’d been a total brat and spoiled the entire day—it wasn’t exactly my proudest moment. And yet she must’ve been able to hear in my voice that it hadn’t been a very good couple of days, because later that afternoon, she showed up on my doorstep.

When I opened the door wider, I saw that Britt and Jessie were there, too.

“What is this?” I asked.

“It feels so weird to have the day off from practice,” Britt said. “So Noelle called us up, and we figured we might as well head over here.”

Wow. It was a superthoughtful idea, and exactly what I needed to bring me out of the funk I’d been in, but I didn’t think I deserved it. Plus, even if I wanted to have them over, I doubted my mom would let me. I had assumed I was grounded, though I’d never been grounded in my life. Grounding me was something that I’m sure my mom didn’t need any training to know how to do. It was, like, in the parents’ manual that they get when you’re born, and I’m sure if ever there was an offense worthy of grounding, ruining Christmas would be it.

My mom had come to stand behind me to see who was at the door, and I turned around. “Please?” I said. “They came all this way to see me.”

Jessie’s mom waved from behind the girls. “Hi, Mrs. Flores,” she said. “Sorry to drop in on you like this, but the girls thought it would be a good idea to have an impromptu team meeting, since there’s no practice today.”

Those were the magic words. If it had something to do with gymnastics, my mother couldn’t not say yes. It was programmed into her even deeper than that parents’ manual stuff.

“Come on in,” she said.

Jessie’s mom said she would come back to get them in a few hours. The four of us went up to my room. Once I’d closed my door, I saw Britt look at Noelle, and Noelle nod at her.

“Uh…” I said, “what’s going on?”

“We’re here to stage an intervention,” Noelle announced.

I’d never actually seen the TV show where people intervened with their family members or friends who had drug problems or were addicted to video games. My mom wouldn’t let me watch it. But I’d heard enough about it that I knew the basic gist, and I was completely lost as to how I qualified for an intervention. “I’m sorry,” I said. “What?”

Britt glanced around my room and frowned. “Usually the people all sit in a circle in chairs,” she said. “Can we bring chairs from the kitchen up here?”

“We’re not going to drag the kitchen chairs up here,” I said, annoyed. “Tell me exactly what you guys are talking about.”

Noelle seemed less sure of herself now, but she raised her chin and faced me. “You seemed down on the phone,” she
