Frank brought the subject up when they went to collect Robbie and Lily. Rose’s dad immediately volunteered. ‘We can ask your brothers too. They’ll be happy to help you, hinny,’ he said.

Grace volunteered even though she wasn’t a blood relative, but Dad and Frank had objected as well as Rose. ‘You have to be in good health to look after all of us,’ Rose explained. Grace was irreplaceable for childcare and to keep them all fed and nurtured and a few weeks off her feet would send their carefully arranged routine into meltdown.

Dad offered to make phone calls to ask both brothers their views on donation sometime that week and Rose was glad it wasn’t while she was there. She didn’t blame anyone for opting out, but she didn’t want to hear hesitancy in either of her brother’s responses. She’d donate for them, but she would understand if they felt too nervous. It was a risky new procedure, so she couldn’t allow herself to think of being given a working kidney and getting her healthy life back. Not yet.

Before she knew it, Christmas was only two weeks away. Rose was finding it hard to find her usual Christmas spirit and she just wanted to go home and straight up to bed after today’s dialysis. She had been going to hospital three times a week for the past month and felt so much better for it, but today Dr Lockwood’s news had been a blow.

Frank had driven her back in silence; even he had run out of positive things to say. He’d left her a cup of tea on the bedside table before heading back out to pick up the kids and let Dad and Grace know the bad news.

No matches. The blood tests had eliminated Dad and her brothers as they were blood type A and no match at all for Rose who was type O. Frank was type O but further tests showed he was not a good enough match to make the transplant viable. The professor had said at the start that they preferred woman to woman transplants because of organ size and they seemed to do better but they would consider the male members of her family if they were a fair match.

‘Sorry Rose but none of your family are a close enough match to make the operation viable.’ The words had echoed in Rose’s head. She didn’t have a match so would have to rely on the tragic death of a stranger to improve her outlook.

She must have slept because she woke up to a pillow wet with tears and a dry throat. This won’t do Rose. Your children deserve a decent Christmas and, if this is your last, it had better be a good one. She got up to fetch a glass of water and to write a list of the things she needed to do before Christmas Eve. Her children and Frank were only going to see her brave face and she’d make 1967 a Christmas to remember.
