On the fourth day of the strike, Superintendent McIlwaine delivered a blow: He withdrew Moton High’s school buses. Without buses, the majority of students could not easily get to school. The students met this challenge by borrowing cars and trucks, recruiting drivers, and organizing car pools. They succeeded in bringing enough students to school for the public protest to continue.

After school that fourth day, the students canvassed the county, carrying petitions, collecting signatures, and asking adults in the black community for support. They spread the word that there would be a mass meeting that night in the First Baptist Church for the PTA and parents interested in learning more about a possible lawsuit.

One thousand people showed up at the meeting held in the church—one quarter of the entire black population of the county. The members of the school board had also been invited, but not a single white person attended.
