M y mom wanted to hear all about the dance.

“It was fun.”

“But you didn’t stay.”

“The music was so loud. I got tired of the boom-boom-boom pounding in my ears.”

She looked at me like I might not be telling her something. “Did you dance?”

“I killed it,” I said with a huge grin. That was all she needed to hear. She looked pleased and hugged me.

“Now go and take that makeup off.”

Although I expected it, I didn’t have a nightmare that night. But I remained on edge about where the Murk might turn up next. I kept checking my phone, disappointed there were no messages from an angel giving me instruction. I needed to know what to do. Who was going to help me?

I tried to decipher more of the Lumen and then looked online to see if anyone posted any pictures from the dance. There were a few selfies, but that was it. I couldn’t wait to go to school and find out what I’d missed.
