COUSIN ALTHEA stood in the front hallway with her bags at her feet. âMy job is done.â
âIt was done the day you tried to make me eat tofu lasagna,â Hallieâs dad said. He picked up one of Theaâs duffel bags and slung it over his shoulder. âIs Thor going to be okay getting down on his own?â
Theaâs smile was placid. âI hope so, since none of us are large enough to help him.â
âLet me get the other bag,â Hallie offered. She wondered if she sounded as numb as she felt. Sheâd slept alone in her old pink gingham room last night. Alone had never felt quite so lonely before.
Thea took Hallieâs hand and clasped it between hers. âEverything happens for a reason, Hallie. If Steve isnât ready to open his life, it simply means thatâ¦â Frowning, she trailed off. âThereâs something different here. Your auraââ
âWill do just fine without you, love,â a voice boomed from the top of the steps.
âHey, Cousin Thor, good to see you out of bed,â Hallie called up the stairs.
âNot half as good as it is to be out of bed. Iâve cleaned the town out of poker money and eaten about all of Theaâs fruits and vegetables I plan to. Itâs time to leave.â He winced as one size thirteen athletic shoe hit the first step. His enormous hand tightly gripped the oak banister. Everybody on the landing held their breath and moved back.
He grinned. âI havenât crushed anybody in years.â
Step by step, he worked his way to the bottom. When he made it, Thea gave his long blond ponytail a playful tug. âYouâve been milking this back thing, havenât you?â
âNah, I was just giving you time to feel comfortable about leaving Hallie and Bud.â
Thea took Hallieâs hand again. Eyes closed, she opined, âStronger. Much stronger.â
âFunny, I donât feel all that strong.â
Thea opened her eyes. âYour father says you insist on riding the family float in the parade. Thatâs plenty strong.â
Hallie thought about that. âYou know, youâre right. Considering everything thatâs happened, I never thought Iâd be saying this, but thanks for luring me home. I guess itâs been worth it.â
Cousin Thea squeezed her hand, then released it. âNow you can look to the future without feeling bound by the past.â
Hallieâs dad shifted the weight of the duffel bag. âDidnât I hear that on a rerun of that kung fu series?â
Thea remained unruffled. âAnd you, Bud, are you ready for your new adventure?â
âWell, after I do my stint as Grand Marshal in the parade, I figured Iâd just keep driving off into the sunset.â
Hallie smiled. âI like that. Maybe we can travel as the Brewer convoy. That is, if I wonât be cramping your style.â
âIf youâre set on leaving, we might as well go together,â her father said. âNow letâs get this show on the road.â
Hallie said her goodbyes to Thor and Thea, who were going to watch the parade, then head back to Wisconsin. After they were settled in their microbus and on their way to town, Hallie hopped into her dadâs âVette and made ready for her own grand exit.
