They had a half-hour before they had to see the fence. No way Damien was going to carry the strongbox into the place, so Armstrong parked in an alley and Damien opened the trunk, grabbed a hammer they’d brought along, and smashed the box’s lock. He opened the lid and began taking out the individual boxes inside, loading them into a big laundry bag they’d put in the trunk earlier.

Armstrong drove the Ford to a furniture store called Denterman’s. The front of the store was all wide-pane windows, showing off the showroom floor. Salespeople talked to customers, pointing out the features of various pieces of furniture.

Armstrong turned left, passing the front of the store, then made a quick right into the narrow alley behind it. They got out, each carrying a laundry sack. Damien pounded on a door marked Private, Keep Locked and they waited.

The door cracked open. A man stuck his head out and said, “Yeah?”

“I’m Damien. Gary’s waiting for me.”

The man pulled his head back in and shut the door. The gang waited, looking around, and the door opened again. The man stepped back and let them come in. He patted them all down, took their revolvers, and ushered them along a dark, narrow hallway that smelled of furniture polish.

The man turned left down another short hallway and knocked on a door. He opened it partway, said something to the guy inside, and pushed the door open. Damien, Stone, and Armstrong went in.

The large office had muted lighting, not much furniture, and bare walls. Gary Canno sat behind a bare table. He stood up and said hello as the three men put their bags on the top.

“Good work, gentlemen,” Canno said. “Want a beer or anything?”

“I want a beer,” Stone said.

Canno went to a small ‘fridge in a corner, grabbed three beers, and handed them to the guys. They found some chairs and sat around the table while Canno began unloading each of the laundry bags.

Canno used a small bolt-cutter to cut open the mini-strongboxes, then spread out one of the laundry bags and began dumping the jewels out onto it, making a big pile. Damien, Stone, and Armstrong sat without talking, drinking beer and watching as Canno examined each stone with an eyepiece, nodding in satisfaction.

It took two hours to go through the stones, and after he finished, Canno took the eyepiece out and looked at the trio in front of him.

“One-point-two-million, my friends.”

“That’s a good haul,” Armstrong stated.

“More than we thought,” Stone said.

“When can we have the cash?” Damien said.

“It will take another hour. I don’t have that much here. I’ll have my guy go get it. You can either stay here and hang out, or there’s a great burger joint across the street.”

“We’ll stay,” Damien said.

“Hey, don’t sweat it,” Canno said. “If you want to eat, I’ll go with you.”

“Let’s eat, then,” Damien said.

“What happened to your neck?” Canno said.

“Don’t ask.”

The group left the office and moved across the street for lunch. There was more than food on Damien’s mind.
