Chapter 29

PRESENT DAY

CHICAGO

Superstition slid on sky-blue panties, still thinking about her mother’s obsession with Jesus-juicing—her nickname for the hours Mom spent praying for whatever it was she prayed for. They’d been close all their lives, more like cherished sisters than The Mother and the Daughter. The easy intimacy that all girlfriends admired and remarked upon over the years began to unravel after the twins were killed, with Theresa Kallas turning increasingly rigid, cool, and uninterested in views that conflicted with hers. It was a profoundly unsettling change for a woman so hip and self-confident that she could name her baby “Superstition,” without apology, and who would start discussions with strangers in stores and restaurants solely to see if her opinions would hold up to scrutiny. —and if they didn’t, freely change them.

Something was eating Mom alive, and it was more than the twins; she was sure of it now, after the “So what if he’s dead, he’s up with God” nonsense from Derek’s funeral. Old Theresa would rather eat glass than act that callously. So something else was going on. Supersitition had tried asking, but got the brush each time: “Still sad about the babies.” Dad shrugged, claiming nothing had changed, but his nonchalance was a hair too evasive. It was time to demand real answers from them both. If they continued to tap-dance, she’d put her cop skills to work, and do whatever it took to get her old Mom back. She’d lost most of her family. She would lose no more.

“But not right now,” she said to her mirror, punching her arms through her T-shirt, then pulling up and snapping her jeans. “You’ve got a party to trash.”
