Chapter Twenty-Seven

I HURRIED BACK HOME, opened my laptop, and threw myself into a deep dive on Vivian and Kip Wagner. I wanted to know who these people were, where they came from, and whether they had a hidden past. I saw no reason for Natti to benefit from spreading false rumors about Vivian. She seemed genuinely scared of the woman and was even afraid to say more. I highly doubted she was putting on a show. What would be the reason? She needed a job. She could have had one with me. Why would she throw that opportunity away? Was it to be vindictive toward Vivian for what happened to Gina? I wasn’t buying the logic. It was too much effort for so little benefit.

For the next hour or so, I did my best to learn all I could about the Wagners. It wasn’t that difficult to find surface-level stuff on Vivian because of all the functions she attended. But if I wanted real information about her, that was hard to come by. She didn’t have a Facebook account. She had a presence on Instagram, but it was merely an extension of the Vivian brand. She favored text messages over messaging apps. I always figured she was “old school” in those respects.

With all the time we spent together since my arrival, you’d think I would know a lot about her. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized I had gotten to know a very curated version of Vivian. As for her husband, Kip, he was even more elusive. Aside from a LinkedIn profile, I couldn’t find anything on the guy.

I wished I’d mentioned Jackie and Kimmy to Natti. Whatever was going on could involve all three women. I knew Jackie and Kimmy had Facebook accounts, because I was friends with them. But their other connections were mostly family and friends. Their Instagram accounts were very much like Vivian’s. It was how they communicated with the public.

I looked closer at Jackie’s and Kimmy’s posts to learn more about Vivian. I knew they had both arrived in Bangkok about two years ago, and gauging from their posts, it seemed like they both met Vivian shortly after their arrival. I didn’t find it strange, as their husbands worked for Kip, just like Jake. Vivian probably reached out to them.

While looking through Jackie’s old posts, I found one that had a picture of her, Vivian, and Gina. I would have thought there would be more, because there were a lot of posts with me. In fact, looking through Kimmy’s social media, I found no photos of Gina. But I knew Gina had been a member of the group at one point. Did they scrub their social media of anything having to do with Gina? It certainly looked like it. All the other pictures I found of Gina and the three were posted by the hosting organizations of those events.

Wait, what are you doing, Emily? Why are you playing investigative journalist
