President Andrew Jackson slicing another Mammoth Cheese, 1837

During his eight years in office, Jefferson purchased more than twenty thousand bottles of wine for use at the President’s House. However, his wine buying declined from more than $2,600 in 1801 to $75.58 in 1808, with the exception of a $2,600 spike in 1804. The radical drop in wine expenditures during his last three years in office seem to be the result of Jefferson’s increasing worries about his financial situation, which was grim, but he didn’t cut back on the food he served at his now-famous dinner parties.

In the spring of 1808, Jefferson, despite his being worn “down to a state of almost total incapacity for business,” entertained 104 guests at seven dinners. Historian Fawn Brodie commented, “His daughters, knowing the precarious nature of his finances and the frightening escalation of his debts, must have been appalled at the cost of the daily presidential hospitality.” But money problems weren’t the only thing on Jefferson’s mind. He was just as worried about pirates.
