16 – Home Again

Cori

“So, you’ll be gone all weekend, right?” Aiden asked me as we sat in his truck in the dorm parking lot. I did not want to leave him, and he didn’t seem eager to drop me off either.

“That’s the plan,” I answered, suddenly wishing I could ask him to come along. It wasn’t the right time to bring him home to meet my dad though. My father never met Josh, even though we dated for nearly a year, but there had never been this feeling like I didn’t want to spend time apart from him either. I knew this should just be chalked up to the rush of hormones and whatnot that flood a person’s system when they first start dating someone knew. Still, Aiden had been right earlier, it felt as though we had known one another so much longer.

“I’m already looking forward to when you get back.”

“Me too,” I returned. If I was honest, I was not exactly looking forward to my trip now. Then again, with the way I was feeling, maybe it would be for the best to have a few days away before I ended up marrying Aiden on a whim or something. Jesus. I could not believe I even thought that. “I’ll see you as soon as I get back.”

“I’d like that.” He agreed. “Do me a favor, let me know when you get there safely too, so I’m not worried about you.”

“This won’t be the first time I’ve driven home to see my dad.” It melted a little hunk of ice around my heart to know he would worry for me though.

“I get it, but you never know, so just humor me, okay?”

I nodded my head, and then after a few, lengthy goodbye kisses, I finally got out of Aiden’s truck and headed into the dorm to go get some sleep before I had to drive out in the morning. Of course, I perched myself in the lobby window long enough to watch Aiden leave before heading to my room.

Wild dreams of a wedding to Aiden, him coming home to meet my father, and us on what looked like a honeymoon, kept me in a dream-wake cycle all night. When I was ready to leave for my father’s house in the morning, it was with the largest, strongest coffee that The Coffee Spot would allow me to purchase.

After taking off at the crack of dawn, I managed to arrive at the house I had grown up in by three in the afternoon. My father, unsurprisingly, was already there with arms wide open, ready to greet me the moment I pulled into the driveway.

“My baby girl has returned home!” He called out as I ran into those arms and felt the warmth of my father’s love embrace me. This man had been my everything, my whole world, for so long. He had been the one to encourage me, show me how I was supposed to be loved in this world, and the one who tried to make up for the lack of a woman in my life the best ways he knew how.
