CHAPTER 22

“Aria, I’m good with how things are now,” London told her.

“Cheek kisses and hugs?” Aria asked.

“For now, yeah,” London replied. “I know what happened back then has you scared now; I get that. But I think, even if it wouldn’t have happened, we might both be thinking about taking things slowly anyway.”

“Why?” Aria asked, leaning back against the counter.

“Because this matters, and we both know it. I’ve dated, but I’ve never felt this. I’ve told women I loved them, and maybe I did, but it wasn’t this, Aria. It wasn’t in the way I– ”

“Don’t say it,” Aria interrupted.

“Why not?”

“Because you don’t know me well enough to say that yet.”

“I did.”

“You did, yeah, but I’m not the same person I was back then, and neither are you.”

“I know,” London said. “I still feel…”

“I do, too, but it’s… I don’t know. Maybe we need to see if we can fall in love again.”

“Again?” London lifted an eyebrow at her.

“Yes, again.” Aria chuckled. “We have this confusing history that makes us feel things, and while some of those things might still be true, not all of them are. For example, I used to hate Brussel sprouts, remember?”

“Yes.” London laughed.

“I love them now. I make them with some candied bacon, and that’s my dinner,” Aria replied.

“So, the good stuff you’re getting with the vegetable, you’re just ruining with candied bacon?”

“Exactly,” Aria said. “I’m a real adult.”

“Well, I like math now,” London said.

Aria’s jaw dropped.

“Not like you like math,” London added. “But I’m in charge of the books for this place.”

“You are not.” Aria laughed. “You couldn’t even figure out what X equaled.”

“I was too busy staring down your uniform shirt to pay attention to the answers,” London remarked.

Aria’s eyebrow lifted.

“Yeah, you never buttoned the top two buttons, you rebel.” London laughed. “And when we sat on the floor by the lockers, I could look straight down.”

“You didn’t.”

“Oh, I did. All the time. I think I knew every bra you owned.”

“What?” Aria laughed.

“There was the plain white one, the pink one that had the little flower in the middle, the–”

“Oh, my God.” Aria laughed louder. “You were so gay, Lo.”

“I know,” London said, laughing as well now and moving closer to her. “You had the black one, too. That one was my favorite.”

“The black one?” Aria seemed to be thinking back. “The sports bra?”

“Oh, yeah. I saw that one a bunch in gym class.”

“It’s a sports bra.”

“We all have our things,” London said.

“Are sports bras still a thing for you?”

“Do you have one?”

“I have a ton. I work out.”

“Shit,” London said.

“Really?”

“You, in a sports bra and probably tight workout pants? Yes, Aria.”

“What else?”

“Turn-ons? We’re really talking about this now when you basically just told me you want to go slow?”

“Yes, we’re talking about it. I didn’t get to hear any of this then.”

“I didn’t know they were called turn-ons then,” London said, laughing but moving to stand next to Aria and lean against the counter. “God, I don’t even know.”

“You don’t know?”

“Do you?” London asked back.
