Sigurd did not turn up for the gathering of the senior jarls the second day after the feasts ended. The jarls shared their lessons and experiences, captured equipment was examined, analysis of Crusader tactics swapped. But without their king, no future plans could be discussed. Late in the day, the king finally arrived in the hall, looking like he had fought all night with… well, with someone his own size.

The king slumped over and sank down into the throne on the dais, which was vast and comfortable, and promptly started falling asleep.

‘So he is not invincible, then,’ Ragnvald noted to jarl Kjartan, smiling wolfishly.

‘He drank enough to kill a jotun, I couldn’t even attend the last two nights I was so ill. But he did it, he did it every night, he turned a defeat into a great story of victory, and there isn’t a man in the army who wouldn’t have walked through that fire in København for him now.’

Ragnvald nodded, still smiling. ‘He is a smart man, he will need that love in the months to come.’ Kjarten nodded sagely as the king started snoring heavily, head tilted back, mouth open, the very picture of nobility.

One of the Norwegian jarls approached the dais and prodded the king gently. Sigurd snapped back to awareness with a snort and looked blearily around him. He struggled to sit upright and waved vaguely in the direction of Ragnvald, who took this as instruction to start the discussion.
