22-Boone

Rivers Motorsports Headquarters, North Carolina

“You should take your clothes off. It’ll help me concentrate.”

Madelyn puts her coat on, even zipping it up. “It won’t help, and we agreed. Nothing in the office.” She puts her feet up on the desk. She mimicked my action the first day, and it’s still amusing.

“Did we agree? I can’t seem to remember.”

“It was this morning.”

My face goes blank. “Doesn’t ring a bell.”

“Over breakfast.”

“It’s all a haze. I guess we’ll never know.” Madelyn’s one insistence was no hanky-panky at headquarters. Madelyn used that word, too, which made the demand perfect. I labeled that horse shit but didn’t push after she gave me another finger wag. I look over at her from where I rest on my couch. “What are you doing?”

“Sending you a reminder.”

This girl is fantastic. Someday, far, far in the future, I’ll thank Sarah for bringing us together. Decades from now, or else she’ll never shut up about it. “Are you going to email me?”

“Email and text.”

“I’ll read them closely.” Then I’ll ignore everything they say.

Madelyn stayed in my hotel room on our last night in Bristol. I fell asleep with her burrowed beside me and my arm splayed across her hip and waist. In the morning, her sleeping face greeted me when I woke. We parted long enough for her to change into fresh clothes, but we were together the entire time. I’ll be honest; it was fucking great.

My phone dings with her text. “Oh, no, I lost cell service.”

“Boone, this is serious.”

“I know, I know,” I grumble and open her text. Our relationship is still fragile, and Madelyn is skittish over it, though it’s unclear why. If a hands-off rule during work hours reassures her, I’ll follow it for now. “Okay, back to Matteo then.”

“Hiring his replacement will be the simple part. I suspect you’ll have mechanics forming a line to work here.”

“Maybe.” It seems like a dream job, but the travel can wear on a person. Several guys with a family at home have quit after a few months. “I’m not bringing it up again until we have a plan.”

“You have a plan. There’s money to fund him in one of the smaller divisions. It’s the convincing you need to think about.”

I mentioned it again while we were in Bristol, and Matteo was still defensive. Many would beg for the opportunity; why not him? “Do me a favor. Go undercover and feel him out for me, will you?”

“Like a spy?”

“Like my partner,” I correct. “Should we talk about national interviews next? We were supposed to last night. We didn’t.” Madelyn clears her throat. “It didn’t happen this morning either.” Because we were in bed and needed to hurry to catch our flight.

“Should I do one? It’s been a while.”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

Sarah barges in, not bothering to knock first. She glances at me on the sofa and Madelyn at her desk. “What are you two doing?”

I raise a hand, confused. “Plotting a coup. What does it look like?”

“Why are you lying on the couch?” she asks me.
