CHAPTER 12

JACK

Monday morning, Jack stood at the file cabinet in the middle of the sheriff’s office. He waited as Sheryl Corbin, the records assistant, found what he requested.

She was a nice enough woman who had welcomed him with a motherly smile. “Here you go,” she said, pulling out the file. “Pat Williamson. He’s the one who was arrested for starting the warehouse fire on Dalton Road.”

“Thanks. Is that the only fire you can recall in the past year?” He had heard there were three and wondered if she would have any information on the other one.

“There’s only one more. It happened about a month ago, but there was no arrest.”

“Was there an investigation? By fire or police?”

Sheryl closed the drawer and returned to her desk. “I don’t think so.”

“But wouldn’t the insurance company have wanted one?” It would only stand to reason.

“It was proven an accident. The Greys were out of town at the time. They’re good people. I’m sure Chief Pellerin can tell you more. But I’m sure all the insurance would need is a statement from him.”

He couldn’t imagine them not looking into it. Surely, they investigated the fire in some way, even if it was just to determine how it started. “I’ll check into that, thanks.”

Jack glanced through Pat Williamson’s file, including the initial report where he denied responsibility for the fire. In fact, Williamson remained adamant that he hadn’t done anything wrong.

He searched for a confession and couldn’t find one. The man served his time and was released just days before the fire was started.

Before he could ask any questions, his phone rang. “Detective Isaac.”

“Detective,” came the sheriff’s voice. “She’s ready.”

“Thanks.” He put the phone back on his belt clip and carried the file with him as he headed to the back.

When he rounded the corner to the interview room, he could already hear the woman arguing.

“When are you going to let me out of here?” she asked in a frantic voice. “I ain't done nothing. I done told you.”

Jack walked to the door as Sheriff Quinn walked out. “She’s all yours.” He wore a disgusted look and kept on down the hall.

Jack peeked into the room where the elderly woman sat pouting. “Hello, Mrs. Blevins.”

“My name is Amelia. Mrs. Blevins was my mother-in-law, the hateful old bat.”

“Very well, Amelia. I’m Detective Isaac.”

“Everly never had a detective,” she said. “I guess you’re some fancy pants from the big city.”

“I’m from Welton. And I’ve never been accused of being fancy pants before.” He offered a smile, hoping she’d lighten up a bit.

“Well, you’re fancy pants just the same,” she said. “And you’re just as bad as the rest of these people around here. I just want to get out of here. I don’t understand why I’m being held. They said I could leave today.”

“I needed to talk to you. And I’m sure they figured you might be better off in here than out there. You were staying in the warehouse, weren’t you?”

“So what?”

“So, what did you see
