Cleveland Indians

Founded in 1901

Other Names: Cleveland Blues, Bronchos, Naps

2 World Championships (1920, 1948)

5 AL pennants

Of the eight original franchises still competing in the American League, none has waited longer for a World Championship than the Indians. Not since 1948, when the owner was Bill Veeck; the manager was Lou Boudreau, a Hall of Fame shortstop; and the home park was cavernous Municipal Stadium, has the Tribe ruled over baseball. So consistently bad were the Indians during much of the 1970s and 1980s that they inspired a movie fable of unwanted castoffs called Major League.

However, the Indians became perennial contenders in the 1990s by signing talented young players to long-term contracts financed in part by the move to a beautiful, intimate ballpark, Jacobs Field. From 1995 through 2001, Cleveland advanced to the playoffs six times and reached the World Series in both 1995 and 1997. After a seven-game loss to the Red Sox in the 2007 ALCS, the Indians fell out of contention until 2013 when former Boston manager Terry Francona guided a largely anonymous roster to an unexpected wild card berth.
