Luke 2:41—52 tells of twelve-year-old Jesus instructing the teachers in the Temple of Jerusalem. Other than that, He lived in Nazareth as the adopted son of a carpenter (Joseph, the husband of Mary). According to Jewish custom, Jesus would have spent most of his infancy and childhood with His mother until He had His bar mitzvah at the age of twelve. From then on, He would have spent more time with Joseph, the head of the family, who happened to be a carpenter.

Why do Christians celebrate Jesus’ birth on December 25th?

Saint Augustine claims it is because Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world” and John the Baptist said in John 3:30, “He must become greater; I must become less.” Based on those passages, the church celebrated the birth of Christ around the winter solstice (after the shortest day of the year, when daylight starts to increase) and the birth of John the Baptist around the summer solstice (after the longest day, when daylight begins to decrease).
