CHAPTER 12

On Tuesday I arrive promptly at Simon’s office. I have a copy of my resume in my bag, along with references from my previous job in Calgary, as well as a letter from my faculty advisor from university, just in case. I felt bad lying to my work about where I would be. Still, nobody seemed to bat an eye when I told them I had another dentist appointment, a follow-up to my previous fictitious appointment.

The commute to Simon’s office is closer than my current job and I walk there, enjoying the freshness of the air before it gets too hot later in the day. The wind blows off the ocean and I can hear seagulls through the sound of traffic as they make their way over to the beach. It’s a beautiful day and if I were prone to skipping, I might just do so.

I spent the last night researching Simon’s company, which, thanks to his business card, I now knew the name of. It’s a large architectural firm and he’s the Director of Finance. They seem to have a good reputation, both from clients and employees but the little I know of Simon, I’m not surprised by this information.

The building is large and imposing and I have to sign in at security. Simon has taken care of everything, though, as there is a temporary pass waiting for me and instructions to send me right up. Outside the elevators on his floor, I make my way to a reception area and only have to wait a minute before Simon walks down the hallway to greet me.

“Mary! I’m so glad you made it. I hope there were no issues with security?”

“No s-Simon, I stutter.” Oh God, I’m so embarrassed at almost calling him sir. It’s become second nature with Jake but Simon either doesn’t notice or doesn’t comment on it because he’s leading me back down the hallway to a large room at the end.

His office is surprisingly cozy despite its size. His desk is in front of a bank of windows and I can just see the ocean through a few other buildings in the distance.

“Please, sit,” Simon instructs as he motions to a chair in front of his desk. He takes the other one next to it, instead of sitting across from me at his rather imposing desk.

“I have my resume, if you would like,” I say and make a move to retrieve it from my bag.

“No need, I already printed the copy you emailed me last night.”

“Sorry, I like to be prepared,” I apologize, feeling the heat enter my cheeks.

Simon brushes my apology out of the air with his hand. “Nonsense. I don’t think you’d be sitting here if you weren’t so organized. It’s a trait to admire not be ashamed of.”

“Thank you,” I stammer.

Simon grabs a folder from his desk and looks over the documents I sent him.

“Tell me about your degrees. What did you specialize in?”

“I started my undergrad in mathematics but then I took a few more classes for a joint degree in statistics.
