As the coach rolled back towards Wellesley House, Charlotte couldn’t believe that Hudson had remembered how much she adored fairs. That simple act meant so much to her. And, in such a short time, he was starting to mean so much to her. How was that possible? She hardly knew him, yet she felt like she had known him forever. He had even started occupying the majority of her thoughts during the day.

Hudson removed his pocket watch from his waistcoat and announced, “We have only been gone for a little over three hours. I hope that is all right.”

“That will do quite nicely,” she said. “Thank you again for this fun adventure.”

“You are most kindly welcome.” Hudson picked up his black top hat from the bench and started fidgeting with it. “Perhaps,” he hesitated, “if you are not opposed, we could go on another adventure in the near future.”

She smiled. “That sounds wonderful.”

Hudson exhaled a breath. “I shall call upon you tomorrow to discuss it then.”

“I shall plan on it.”

Isabella spoke up. “What if we took her to the Royal Menagerie?”

“No,” Hudson said with a shake of his head. “That is much too crowded. We need to pick another venue.”

“What if we took her to the masquerade ball that Lady Thornley is throwing tomorrow night?” Isabella asked.

Charlotte gasped. “I would love that.”

Hudson winced. “That might be too risky. If anyone discovered your true identity—”

“No one shall,” she said, cutting him off. “I will leave before everyone removes their masks.”

“I shall have to think on it,” he replied.

Isabella shifted in her seat towards her. “We are going to have such fun!”

“I haven’t said yes, yet,” Hudson objected, frowning.

“But you will,” she replied confidently.

“Why do you say that?” he asked.

Isabella smiled. “Because I can be quite convincing.”

“You seem to forget that I used to argue for a living,” Hudson replied, appearing unimpressed.

Her smile grew smug. “I argue for fun, and I’m relentless.”

“That you are.” He chuckled.

The coach came to a stop, and the footman opened the door. Before she could exit, Hudson stepped out and extended his hand back towards her.

As she slipped her hand into his, he gently encompassed it while he assisted her out of the coach.

When she stepped onto solid ground, she started to remove her hand, but he held firm. He slowly brought it up to his lips and kissed her gloved hand.

Charlotte let out her breath, only then realizing she had been holding it.

“Thank you for such a memorable afternoon,” Hudson said with her hand still near his mouth.

She stood there for a moment, unable to formulate a response with him looking at her like that.

“I feel the same way,” she finally managed to say.

A boyish grin came to his lips as he released her hand. “That makes me immensely happy, Lady Charlotte.”

Isabella’s voice came from the coach. “Bye, Lottie.”

Charlotte dragged her eyes from Hudson and turned towards her friend. “I hope you have an enjoyable rest of your day.”

“Be safe as you climb up the tree,” Hudson cautioned, drawing back her gaze.
