Chapter Twelve

She assumed Con would leave shortly after breakfast, but he hung out. He even helped clean up the dishes, washing the pans. After his second cup of coffee, he laid on her bed watching her gather her backpack and load up her computer.

“Tomorrow’s your early night, right? I’ll pick you up when you get off. We’ll get dinner.”

Wren’s hand froze on the open pocket of her bag. Her back was to Con, and she hoped he didn’t catch her hesitation. It was a repeat of the night before with less anger. It still left her unsettled knowing she’d have to lie, especially after the conversation they’d just had about opening up to one another. She’d meant every word except for certain aspects of her life. This was where it would get tricky.

“I can’t.”

“Why not?”

She bit her lip. “School. I’ve got two papers.”

“Take that shit seriously, huh?”

“Yeah, I do.” Wren was a few weeks away from graduation. It had taken her longer than she’d hoped to get her degree, but it was a proud moment. For her.

He hooked his arm around her waist and fell back on the bed, taking her with him. Con smiled, brushing her hair away from her face. His rough, scabbed knuckles caressed over her jaw in a light touch.

“You quitting the strip club after you graduate? Get something better.”

“No.” Wren had planned out the next three years, which would keep her exactly where she was and doing exactly what she did. “I’m actually going to get my Masters. I’ve already been accepted into the program.”

“Big fucking brain you got, huh?” he teased. “You get that from your parents?”

“My dad was really smart, more street smarts, but he had a head for business too.” Wren sighed. “He just didn’t always make the best decisions.”

“You holding out on me?”

Wren stared across the room. If anyone would understand and not pass judgement, she assumed it would be a man like Con who was notoriously known for being on the wrong side of the law.

“He’s in prison.”

“For what?”

Wren inhaled and slowly let out a deep breath, contemplating her approach. There was no sugar coating her father’s crimes. They were public knowledge.

“I did a year, Wren.”

She whipped her head. It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it did. “What did you do?”

“Drugs.” When her eyes widened, he shifted closer. “Not recreational. I was transporting, not a large amount but enough to get some time.”

“So, East is in the drug trade?”

Wren had heard most of the rumors, but nothing had been confirmed. Until now.

“We were. Not anymore.” He slid his hand over her thigh. “What’s your dad in for?”

“Firearms. He’s on his fourth year of twelve. The first was the hardest, at least for me. I joke that he won’t even recognize me when he finally gets out.”

“You don’t see him?”

If it was up to Wren, she would.

“He won’t let me visit. Says he doesn’t want me to see him that way. I actually tried visiting twice, once the first year and another time his third.
