CHAPTER

TWENTY-NINE

LONDON

Arthur Preston leaned toward the mirror to closely inspect his face. He had perfect eyesight, but he thought he saw the hint of a red abrasion near his hairline.

Where could that have come from?

But upon further investigation, he withdrew and exhaled. It wasn’t anything. He’d probably imagined it, attributing it to the amount of stress he’d been under. He shrugged it off and then smoothed down his blue oxford shirt, forcing the fabric to accentuate the contours of his sculpted chest.

Who says the CEOs of a Fortune 100 company has to look like he hasn’t worked out in twenty years?

Preston wondered if he could blaze several new trails as the freshly-minted leader of JF Industries, no matter how temporary it was. There wasn’t any reason a busy CEO couldn’t maintain a certain level of physique, even if the one he had currently would likely overwhelm most of his sudden peers in the industry. He’d been around enough of them to know that for a group that had a knack for seeing into the future and knowing what it took to get there, most of them weren’t willing to make the sacrifice necessary to get a shredded body. Preston figured these CEOs concluded that they had already made so many sacrifices to reach the zenith of their careers that they didn’t feel inclined to make any more. They wanted to enjoy the fruits of their labor. And Preston couldn’t really blame them. But he wasn’t about to go soft. His role as JF Industries’ new CEO defied conventional odds. He wasn’t just to be the public face of the company—he was hired to do the impossible. And why not? He’d trained his entire life for this moment. It’s why he’d been chosen.

A knock on the dressing room door snapped him back to the present as he remembered the whole reason why he was primping. He had a large convention hall packed with people waiting to hear from him.

“Come in,” Preston said as he threaded a Windsor knot with his tie and tightened it.

A man in his twenties wearing a headset with a wrap-around microphone and clutching a clipboard entered the room.

“Mr. Preston, did you have a chance to look over the PowerPoint presentation the emcee is using for your introduction?” the man asked. “I’d hate for you to have to spend the few days of your tenure answering questions about a mistake we made.”

Preston squinted and looked at the man.

“What’s your name again?” he asked.

“Olly Baker,” the man said.

“Well, Mr. Baker, I’m going to trust that you know what you’re doing and that you’ve hired a competent staff,” Preston said. “And that’s how you lead. You don’t need to look over everyone’s shoulder to make sure that they’re doing what you’ve asked them to do. You trust them to do their job to the best of their abilities and do it well. And if they make a mistake, you brush it off. You can’t expect perfect from yourself or from anyone else.
