CHAPTER

NINETEEN

STACY

It was a clear night, rare for Seattle this time of year. Stacy looked up and she could see the moon and stars peeking through the rose bush above her. Her heart was racing, but she didn't know why. She wasn't being chased and the night was bright enough that she could see all around her. Still, something ominous was hanging in the air, causing the hairs on Stacy's arm to stand on their ends. The city was quieter than usual, she could hear the occasional car, but other than that it was just animal sounds and the smell of a cool night air.

Suddenly, Stacy heard someone behind her. Their footsteps were getting faster as they headed toward her. She didn't know who they belonged to, but she knew she had to run. She picked up the pace, tried to find a path, but when she looked down there was only grass. No matter, she just had to start running. Her breath quickened along with her heartbeat as Stacy tried to run through the rosebush maze, but she kept getting tangled in the brambles. The thorns were scratching at her face, she could taste blood where a thorn tore her lips.

"Stacy! We just want to talk to you!" the voice called out to her. It felt familiar but Stacy couldn't place it. "Stop running, it'll only be worse if you run!"

She couldn't stop. The voice wasn't friendly, she didn't know what kind of trap the voice had in store for her. A phone rang in the bushes. She reached out and grabbed it while running, the caller ID said it was Henry, so she answered.

"Henry" Stacy said, "I'm running!"

"You better run; they won't care what you say if they catch you. You'll be locked up beside me, we'll both be in trouble."

"Henry, I think I'm already in trouble. I can't catch my breath I⁠—"

"This is why I tell you to work out, Stacy. You're on your own, there's nothing I can do for you now. They found the girl; they won't stop until they get you."

"Which girl? Who are you talking about? Henry! Henry!"

He was gone, the phone in Stacy's hand melted away, like it didn't exist. Was it evidence? She didn't know, she shook the residue off her hands and kept running. Henry was right, she really ought to work out more, Stacy's legs were starting to seize up. Behind her she could hear a team of search dogs barking in the night, sniffing out her trail. She could try to outsmart them, but there were no trees. She was running through a labyrinth of thorned vines, vines that seemed to climb up onto brick walls before disappearing in the dark. Where was she? Was Stacy still in Seattle?

"Stacy, we will not make this offer again. Turn yourself in now and we can work out a deal! There's no deal if you keep running away from us. We only want to talk to you; we want to ask you a few questions," the voice boomed again.
