It was a cinch for Rème to persuade Emmaline that they ought to all go on to Cabaret Shéhérazade after dinner. She clearly wanted to go; it was only the question of whether the children ought to be in a place like that that made her waver. Would a night-club in racy Montmartre even let them in?

Rème waved away Emmaline’s concerns. ‘This is Paris! So long as you do not inconvenience your neighbour, you can do as you please.’ He gestured at Pepper, Norah, Sol and Elliot. ‘And they are not little children. Pfft! There are dancers in the Moulin Rouge of almost the same age!’

The Moulin Rouge argument would never have worked on the Captain, Pepper thought. Quite the opposite. He would have been exceedingly displeased at the mere suggestion that his daughter might be anything like a French chorus girl. But Emmaline seemed to have overlooked all that. She had fallen gladly under the Parisian influence of doing as one pleased. And perhaps, Pepper conceded, Emmaline was falling more than a little under Rème’s influence, too.
