Chapter Fourteen

Anlow landed on the outskirts of a deep forest.

“Where are we?” Kalylle asked, glancing around with interest.

“We’re at the edge of Lakville Forest,” Philippe told him. They’d been flying for over two days, and his back constantly reminded him of how unnatural he found the activity. Having to carry his saddlebags over his shoulders certainly didn’t help Philippe’s comfort, either. He slid off Anlow and stretched, trying to work out some of the kinks. Before Kalylle could ask the question, he added, “The entrance to Cintion is half a day’s hike through these woods, and the branches are too thick to land any closer.”

The wizard frowned. “I’ve never heard of anything in Lakville Forest. Too many bandits,” he pointed out.

Philippe snorted as he headed into the woods. “Who do you think keeps the city’s whereabouts a secret?” After a moment of silence, he looked at Kalylle over his shoulder. “You’ll have to show me these maps you keep referring to. I bet I can make a few updates.”

The wizard laughed. “I’ll be sure to do that.”

Feeling Kalylle’s presence at his back, Philippe knew the wizard followed closely. He heard Anlow’s hooves thumping softly on the needle-strewn ground not far behind them. After a bell of quiet, a soft grunt caught Philippe’s attention. Turning, he watched Kalylle pull a long thorn from his leg.

Philippe frowned. “That’s a gorn plant. Sometimes they inject poison.”

“It itches,” Kalylle admitted irritably. “What does that mean?”

Philippe shrugged. “Don’t know, but come here.”

“Having a healer around does have its advantages,” Kalylle quipped, a smile curving his lips.

“Hopefully, only for you,” Philippe muttered, glaring at his lover.

Looking suitably abashed, Kalylle held up his robes. Philippe probed lightly around the torn flesh. When the wizard let out a soft hiss, he straightened and cradled his lover’s face with his hands.

Philippe peered into Kalylle’s deep blue eyes as he whispered, “And you tell me to be more careful. I’m going to heal the wound. If you’ve been poisoned, I’ll have to reopen it. You need to let me know if it continues to itch.”

Kalylle nodded. Even before Philippe’s lips settled against his lover’s the wizard’s eyes dilated in anticipation. Smiling, he sealed his mouth over his wizard’s and let out a shallow breath. Infusing him with healing warmth, he concentrated his focus on the wound he’d probed.

“Philippe!”

Caught up in the sounds of Kalylle’s moans, Philippe just managed to break the kiss only because he heard Anlow stamp her hoof. “Seven hells, Kalylle,” Philippe rumbled. He sighed as he eyed his lover. “Your taste is amazing and your response even better. So damn distracting.”

Kalylle grunted, shifting his stance. “Well, if your damn Darkling’s Kiss wasn’t so fantastic,” he grumbled.

Philippe chuckled. “It’s called an Angel’s Kiss, and I’m going to remind you that it’s best if others don’t find out about this ability. I’m not a true healer. I can’t heal everything,” he warned, sobering, glancing at Kalylle’s once more hidden leg. “Plus,” he added. “There are too many things that can go wrong.
