I’m shaking when I enter the rookery. That was a confrontation that I hadn’t been expecting. Not yet anyway. I don’t even know if there will be other men in my life apart from Jerrick. He’s the only one I know anything about. If I lose him now over this, it will devastate me. I’d hoped for more time with him to prepare him for the possibility.

I sigh as one of my ravens comes to land on my shoulder, tilting his glossy black head towards me. I stroke him with the back of my finger, feeling a slight spark. I pull back, scared that I’ve hurt him, but if anything, he seems happy about it, ruffling his feathers and nestling closer to me.

I grin. “Hey, little love,” I croon to him and sit on a hay bale. “Life sucks right now. Mind if I tell you about it?”

I’m about to launch into my tale of woe, when an almighty crash startles me into jumping up, causing the raven to take flight with an ear-piercing caw.

“What the hell?” I demand as I see one of the Dark Fae Guards, crumpled up in a corner of the barn, out for the count.

It all becomes very clear in the next second as I feel that god-awful fog descend on me and a hand at my back forcing me to stumble into the barn wall.

Anders spins me around and grips my shoulders. “Princess, we’re trying this again. This time, I have bigger plans for you.”

I can’t move. I can’t speak. I can’t throw this damned compulsion off. All I can do is blink at him.

“Very good,” he murmurs. “You’re stronger than I thought, Princess. All I needed was to know exactly how much of this spell I have to throw over you, to keep you cognizant, but utterly pliable in my hands. Perfect.”

I grimace at him. He’s been testing me this entire time. I should’ve known it wasn’t me that was pulling myself out from under his spell, but rather that he wasn’t giving me his all.

“It’s been such fun playing with you. If you weren’t a half breed, this wouldn’t work on you at all. Damned Royal Dark Fae resistance. I’ll thank your mother when I see her. “

He must sense the fear shoot through me because he smiles coldly. “Yes, I know she’s here. I also know why she’s here. But she doesn’t interest me. Not anymore. Not now that Drake has decided that his heir is going to be you.”

The fear turns to something far worse as those words sink in.

“You see,” he continues, “this works out perfectly. Once you are Queen, you will be required to take a Light Fae as a mate. You will choose me. Together we will create a child that will unite our races and I will secure my position as King.”

“Ugh,” I spit out, drawing on a sudden strength from somewhere unknown. “In your dreams. They didn’t ask for you. You are their King because your father and brothers were killed.
