When they were back at his grandparentsâ house, Theo said, âSo, um. I met Mr. Tradat the other day. He said heâs the postman.â
âThatâs right, dear,â Gramma said.
âAnd thatâs his daughter Winny?â
Grampa paused in the middle of picking out a new book from the stack by his favorite chair and his mustache twitched downward.
Quickly, Theo rushed on. âI saw her at the matinee the other day, but we didnât get to talk. I wondered if maybe I could go by her house and invite her to play with me and Bay and Jilly someday. If you know where she lives?â
Gramma and Grampa shared a long look, then Gramma said gently, âWe donât intrude in peopleâs homes without an invitation, Theo.â
Theoâs shoulders sagged. âOh. Sorry. I was just trying to be nice.â
âI know, dear.â
âBesides,â Grampa said. âThe Tradats live on the outskirts of town. Probably too far for you to walk.â
âCertainly not on your own, what with it being so close to the forestâs boundaries.â Gramma shot a worried glance at Grampa. âAt any rate, youâll be busy enough getting to know the two friends you already have, yes?â
âYes, maâam,â Theo said, but he was puzzled. What was wrong with having three friends? Mom always said the more, the merrier. But maybe that was another weird Deadwood Hollow thing. Maybe here, kids could only have so many friends at a time.
Sighing, Theo said, âIs it ok if I go over to Bayâs? Heâs showing me and Jilly his grandfatherâs comic book collection.â
Grammaâs expression brightened. âOh, did they keep that? What a delight!â
Grampa chose a book and settled into his favorite chair. âI remember those. Glad they held onto them.â
âTheyâre pretty interesting,â Theo admitted. Especially the one about the werewolf, though he wasnât telling his grandparents that. What they didnât know wouldnât hurt them. Probably.
âGo along then, dear,â Gramma said, âand have a good time. Remember to be back before dark.â
âYes, maâam. I will.â
Theo ran upstairs and grabbed his basketball, then promised again as he left, just so theyâd maybe forget how nosey heâd been about Winny Tradat.
