Essex stood in the middle of the field and scraped the top of his head with his hand. St Leger stood beside him, sweating in his armour as the weight on his shoulders grew and grew. He wished to edge away for the more the day rolled on, the less likely it was the rebels would appear and the Lord Deputy would then look for someone to blame. Essex now turned to him.

“They are not coming, are they?”

“They are cowards and liars, lord.”

“First, they kill my cook and now they are making a fool out of me. There will be retribution for this, mark my words.”

Eager to take the opportunity to deflect any blame, St Leger ran after him.

“What would you have us do, lord.”

“Make sure we take ten lives for each one we lost in the raid where the cook died.”

St Leger saluted and hollered at Taaffe to follow him.

Freed from their armour to cause mayhem, St Leger and Taaffe unleashed a wave of destruction upon the two nearby helpless villages. Fire blazed through the homes and cries of agony filled the air as the citizens were hung from gallows in retribution as they felt the Lord Deputy’s wrath. Murrogh watched in despair as pillars of dark smoke billowed into the sky, searing his mind with memories of his own cowardice. Filled with renewed courage, he declared that never again would he succumb to fear and let his brother stand in his way.
